To me Best Care is about our ability to reflect on our day-to-day practice to deliver care that is centred around the patients’ needs.
A good example of living Best Care I have been involved in within the past couple of years is Lana van Raay’s research. Lana is a clinical nurse specialist working at the Radiology Department at Footscray Hospital. She reflected on her unit’s practice of admitting patients the day prior for angiography. By working with the teams in Medical Imaging and the Surgical Vascular Unit, Lana collected evidence demonstrating that same day admission was not only just as effective and safe as overnight admission, but more convenient for patients with less re-bookings and cancellations. Lana’s research also had positive implications for costs and led to a reduction in nurse workload overnight. Lana won the best Nursing/Midwifery oral presentation at the Western Health Research week 2018.
