Compliment of the Week – 25 September 2020

Every single staff member at Western Health – either directly or indirectly, whether clinical staff, non-clinical staff or volunteer - makes a contribution every day to supporting the provision of Best Care and the best experience for our patients. Compliments are real examples of our staff providing Best Care. Through our 'compliment of the week' we acknowledge staff who successfully translate our Vision of delivering Best Care into day-to-day behaviours.

Our vision of Best Care is to provide person-centred, co-ordinated, right and safe care for every patient, every time, everywhere.  Delivering Best Care within the complexity of our health system is not always easy.  We would like to recognise the provision of Best Care by Western Health staff working on Footscray 2D and the Footscray ED, an in particular Myra (2D NUM).  We share these words recently sent to us by, Krista – a healthcare worker from an external organisation.

I write to let the executive know how amazing Myra, the staff of 2D and the staff of ED are. In the face of COVID-19 public health restrictions, patient care, and outbreaks, the team have continued to provide for the needs of our shared patient who requires twice daily directly observed therapy. These heroic efforts have been noticed and appreciated.

Myra volunteered to work with the patient and our program to facilitate a discharge following a long inpatient stay. Thinking outside of the box in enabling the patient to attend the ward for directly observed treatment proved to be the first of many creative, professional and caring responses that Myra and her staff have provided. This contribution to his treatment has made a significant difference in health outcomes.

I spoke with him today and he tells me that the Footscray ED staff and security are kind and work to facilitate a smooth and prompt entrance to the hospital so that he can make his way to 2D. He went on to tell me that Myra and the 2D staff continue to be kind and warm as they provide him with medications at times that suit his lifestyle. The warmth in his voice in speaking about the service was heartening.

I am grateful to Myra and the team who have assisted in facilitating the patient’s signature on documents when no other option is available. Myra and the 2D staff, the ID team, and ED staff are significant in the patient’s care not just in terms of his diagnosis and treatment, but also his wellbeing. Thank you.
