COMPLIMENT OF THE WEEK – 14 January 2022

We would like to recognise the provision of Best Care by staff working at the Sunshine Hospital ICU. We share the words of appreciation from Rachelle, reflecting on the care recently received by her father in the Sunshine ICU.

Every single staff member at Western Health – either directly or indirectly, whether clinical staff, non-clinical staff or volunteer – makes a contribution every day to supporting the provision of Best Care and the best experience for our patients. Compliments are real examples of our staff providing Best Care. Through our ‘compliment of the week’ we acknowledge staff who successfully translate our Vision of delivering Best Care into day-to-day behaviours.

Our vision of Best Care is to provide person-centred, co-ordinated, right and safe care for every patient, every time, everywhere.  Delivering Best Care within the complexity of our health system is not always easy.  We would like to recognise the provision of Best Care by staff working at the Sunshine Hospital ICU. We share the words of appreciation from Rachelle, reflecting on the care recently received by her father in the Sunshine ICU.

Dear Western Health,

A massive thank you to the staff in ICU, my dad was admitted with COVID pneumonia and your team were nothing short of incredible.

I received almost daily updates and when they couldn’t they were unnecessarily apologetic. They managed to keep him away from being intubated. They managed to significantly drop his oxygen requirement within the week.

The consultant showed how passionate and proud he is of good patient outcomes.

In particular I would like to thank nurse Susanna for facilitating a video phone call with dad when it might very well have been his last. Nurse Phillip, Drs Nick and Nick who interchangeably were so helpful, raw, and honest about his progress and genuinely empathetic.

Thank you also to the health assistants/orderlies. The allied health team – dietitians for giving him different flavoured resource drinks (prime talking point when that’s all he had to look forward to).

From one health care worker to another I know how much burden COVID creates on your workload and you certainly didn’t allow it to affect your standard of care.

This has also given me new perspective and I think I will be a better nurse for it too.

So thank you Sunshine ICU!
